Today, powerglide transmissions are reliable up to as much as 3000 horsepower in certain applications. I have a stock 1.76 first gear and they make 1.64, 1.65, 1.69, 1.76, 1.80 & 1.96.

Mine had/has 3.55 and is fun around town, although a little high strung (revving) on the highway. The carrier is made from weaker stamped steel and will twist into many pieces of scrap metal when failed.
