They have no replacement set for Bob. Rouge FM dropped 2.5 percentage points in market share from a year ago. O’Neil is refreshing and entertaining but somewhat lacking in actual sports knowledge. Virgin also saw a drop, continuing a long decline that has seen it lose more than half its audience in three years. Numeris released its quarterly ratings report for metered markets on Wednesday, and for Montreal the only surprising thing is how much The Beat continues to dominate over Virgin Radio. The numbers you are reporting are not ratings. Meanwhile, in Toronto, TSN 1050 finally beat Sportsnet’s 590 The Fan with its morning and afternoon shows (among men 25-54 anyway), which Toronto Sports Media notes has a lot to do with how unstable The Fan’s lineup has been. Thanks for the new numbers MIB. The consequence is that the numbers often have odd jumps and dips.
The boost was enough to warrant an article in the Journal de Montréal. Despite all these flaws, this is the system that the industry itself has chosen and there seems to be little desire from within to aim for something better.
Like Virgin, CHOM is also experiencing a long-term downward trend from its high in 2013. Bob, in my opinion, has been almost stealing a living over the last several years. In early afternoons TSN1050 finally has a meaningful victory over the competition. I don’t know why the ratings are down (though the P.K. Are these supposed to overlap? Bell also tops in Trois-Rivières, though the lead is not as large.
Numeris came out with its quarterly metered market radio ratings last week.
Just my opinion though. It’s just not a match especially during hockey season. BUSINESS OF SPORTS, RADIO, TELEVISION.
Maybe I am wrong but from my respective this doesn’t look like huge gains for TSN but rather a reduction in the overall listenership and a drop in the fan’s ratings. If there's one topic that has generated more interest than any other around here it's radio ratings. Our loss, IMHO. The fact that both shows saw losses suggests to me a change in the PPM listeners schedules rather than a loss of confidence in either show.
Maybe 3rd man on a morning show. The book is more bad news for Virgin Radio, which tried to turn things around by letting go of program director Mark Bergman (he’s now at The Beat) and morning hosts Freeway Frank and Natasha Gargiulo and stealing Vinny Barrucco back from The Beat to lead its new morning show. The trend line for Radio-Canada is impressive, taking a big jump in the fall of 2016 and continuing to improve. He’s a character and that’s really valuable because radio is supposed to be entertaining.
Though it’s still ahead of Rouge FM in the ratings, its share dropped to 16.3% from a high of 20.5% in the summer. Nothing against Dan Patrick he is a fine broadcaster, but I don’t care about the same stuff he is talking about.
CHOM recovered a bit after hitting a new low in the last quarter. We might be finally seeing the result of long time neglect. No matter how much money you throw at a person, as the employer you have to ask yourself why that person’s current employer is willing to let them go. Among francophones, talk radio actually did better during the summer, with 98,5fm still ahead at an 18.6% overall share, followed by Rythme FM (13.6%), ICI Première (12.7%), CKOI (10.4%), Rouge (8.8%), The Beat (6.3%) and Énergie (5.8%).
“Montreal’s #1 Hit Music Station” is going to have to do more than replace its morning team to fix this disparity. There was some shifting of the order, but the biggest change was to RNC Media’s Pop 100.9, which doubled its share. Here it seems obvious that TSN’s gains are exactly PTS’s losses. Radio X regains the lead in the heartland, after being in third a year ago. Bell owns the Sherbrooke market pretty well, with the top two stations representing more than 40% listening share. In this post, I’ll go into some more detail about the Montreal numbers, with charts! The Fall and Winter books are important since these represent the time of the year when all four sports are making news and people are generally at work and in their cars. The FAN believes in the Brady brand enough to build a 3rd morning show around him.
Both would put GOOD SHOW out of their misery permanently.
