Sweet, malty grain notes as well as a whiff of those orgeat-syrup-ed, hot milk toddies from the original Cafe Trieste in San Francisco.

It does not have the strength or the complexity that the Hibiki 12 year old does in such a drink, but it does make for a light, refreshing glass. I’d wager this would make excellent an excellent Hiball which I suppose makes it an excellent summer dram. The Toki bottle is really solid. Finishes with just a touch of heat and lingering, fruity sweetness. Toki is also the name of the latest blended whisky released by the House of Suntory. This Japanese Whisky is carefully distilled at Hakushu, Yamazaki, and Chita distillery, Japan. Welcome to our review of Suntory Toki Japanese Whisky. Toki means "time" in Japanese so let's have some Whisky Toki! No real criticism, just an observation, as it doesn’t really spoil or take over unduly. In the end, Toki just isn't our forte.

In terms of the color in the glass that Suntory calls 'clear gold', it doesn't compare well our usual bourbons or rye whiskeys. Thanks for the review! This is a lighter whisky, with an initially straightforward seeming flavor profile.

Here’s what we found when we tasted the Toki neat out of the bottle:Nose: Fresh, light and inoffensive. Had a lovely highball with it two nights ago, but was sipping it last night and enjoyed it just as much. We don’t know the proportion of the components, but the fancy marketing patter suggests it’s at least half grain whisky: Traditionally in Suntory blends, grain whiskies have played merely a supporting role, acting as a broth or dashi to accentuate key malts. The palate is again on the soft side, but really fresh with vanilla, apricots, honey and grapefruit all rolled in together with an almost sweet white wine like note. He saw these whiskies, with their exquisite balance of complexity, subtlety and refinement, not as a scaffold for the heroic malt to ascend but as true heroes in their own right. Chita forms the basis of blend and then whilst both Hakushu and Yamazaki malts are present, it’s the floral notes of Hakushu that are more prominent.Toki is bottled at 43% ABV and can still be obtained in the US for a reasonable price (I.E. Alcohol is to be enjoyed in moderation and with great responsibility. All that said, the Toki and the Hibiki are very different whiskies. It also finished some of its malt in ex-Umeshu barrels, Umeshu being a traditional Japanese plum liqueur. Still not complex, still not deep and bold, but tasty nonetheless. Toki has a different composition to another Suntory blend, Hibiki, as its main components are Hakashu single malt and Chita grain whisky. Producer: Suntory. The mouthfeel is reasonable, but not hugely coating. It doesn’t have the complexity of the single malts, of course, but it works nicely as a first dram of the night, the warming-up-your-palate one. We're thankful for the opportunity to give it a go and enjoyed learning about Japanese whisky, but this isn't one we recommend or will be buying in the future.
