It's not a bad movie as such, it's just a little lacking. You're almost there! While it seemingly draws on the likes Tarantino's Pulp Fiction and True Romance, there's still something alluring and awfully inviting about Jackie Earle Haley's lively and intriguing directorial debut, Criminal Activities. They run into Noah ("The Guest" star Dan Stevens), an awkward acquaintance that they used to bully back in school. Naturally, Marques is not who he appears to be, and the boys' scheme goes sour faster than you can say, "Wasn't that Travolta guy in 'Pulp Fiction?'". "Criminal Activities" is a sneaky, snaky little crime thriller with some pretty impressive plot twists. Coming Soon. Travolta's recent performances have had their moments of campy zeal, particularly his over-the-top turns in "Savages" and "From Paris with Love."

So much of "Criminal Activities," a dizzyingly convoluted hostage drama, feels like a grim hang-out … and to receive email from Rotten Tomatoes and Fandango. Perhaps later, Haley will look back on scenes where he overlooked Travolta's goldmine of quirks and facial tics on poor-blocked speeches, and hopefully laugh.

Working from a chatty script not as cleverly hatched as it likes to think it is, Haley whips it into something decently entertaining even as you begin thinking about how truly great "Get Shorty" and Travolta's Chili Palmer were midway through those double-crossing criminal activities.


So much of "Criminal Activities," a dizzyingly convoluted hostage drama, feels like a grim hang-out comedy as scripted by undergrad college film students. These scenes are too unimaginative to be stylish, though they try very hard to impress viewers with many plot twists, shocking violence, and ostentatious Proust quotes (seriously, this movie's first line of dialogue is from Proust).
